Those wishing to apply for the International Experience Canada (IEC) program must submit their applications by October 21.
The government work permit program is intended for youth aged 18 to 35 (or 18 to 30 in certain countries) to explore Canada while gaining valuable work experience and living abroad.
Depending on their citizenship, some countries permit applicants to participate in the program multiple times in different categories. This varies by country, and candidates cannot exceed the number of opportunities allowed for their specific nationality.
Candidates can apply for one of three streams under the IEC:
- International Co-op (Internship): The International Co-op (Internship) stream is intended for citizens of eligible countries seeking to come to Canada to work as interns for Canadian companies. According to IRCC, applicants must arrange their co-op placement before submitting their IEC application.
- Young Professionals: Under the Young Professionals stream, candidates are granted employer-specific work permits if they have a confirmed job offer and will be employed by a single employer during their time in Canada.
- Working Holiday: Working Holiday stream offers an Open Work Permit. These permits allow holders to work for most employers in Canada, providing greater flexibility in terms of location.
After receiving and accepting an invitation to apply, the candidate has 20 days to submit their work permit application.
In addition to their passport and Port of Entry Letter, an IEC participant may be required to provide proof of funds, proof of health insurance, and either a return ticket from Canada or evidence of sufficient funds to purchase one.
According to IRCC guidelines, participants must present bank statements issued no more than one week before their departure to Canada. These statements must demonstrate that the participant has enough funds to support themselves for the first three months of their stay, with a minimum amount of $2,500.
