Express Entry

In January 2015, the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) implemented a fresh skilled immigration system to manage applications for permanent residency. This system encompassed the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP).

The system operates by assigning a score to each candidate on a scale of 1200 points and subsequently ranking them against other applicants. Regular assessments are conducted to determine a cut-off score for eligibility.

Minimum requirements

Applicants who satisfy the minimum eligibility requirements will enter the Express Entry pool and receive a score ranging from 0 to 1200, evaluating factors such as education, age, work experience, and language proficiency. Each candidate will be compared to others in the pool and ranked accordingly.

Periodically, a cut-off score is established, and individuals with scores above that threshold will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residency. It is important to note that being part of the Express Entry pool does not guarantee the issuance of an ITA.

To meet the eligibility criteria

Candidates who possess a valid Provincial nomination enjoy a significant advantage, as they receive an additional 600 points. This virtually guarantees their high ranking in the Express Entry pool and increases their chances of being selected to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residency.

Furthermore, candidates with a valid job offer in an NOC 00 occupation are awarded an additional 200 points, while those with a valid job offer in NOC 0, A, or B occupations receive an extra 50 points. It’s worth noting that certain qualifying job offers no longer require an LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) to obtain these additional points.

Your employer is exempt from the LMIA requirement if:

1. You have been employed full-time by the same employer on your work permit for at least 1 year (or the part-time equivalent).

2. You hold a valid job offer from the same employer on your work permit for a minimum of 1 year.

3. You possess a valid employer-specific work permit that falls under an exemption from LMIA requirements based on an international agreement, a federal-provincial agreement, or the Canadian interests category.
