A new PR pathway for families affected by the conflict in Sudan

The department has verified that beginning on February 27th, 2024, it will be receiving a maximum of 3,250 applications from either single applicants or families. This newly established family sponsorship pathway will confer permanent residency (PR) upon successful applicants. Furthermore, IRCC has stated its intention to waive the right of permanent residence fee and offer complimentary settlement services to individuals who attain PR status through this pathway.

Who is eligible to apply through this newly established pathway?

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for this pathway:

  • Have been residing in Sudan on April 15th, 2023.
  • Not possess another country to return to aside from Sudan or Canada.
  • Furnish a statutory declaration from their anchor, affirming:
    • Their intention to support the applicant and any accompanying family members for a duration of one year.
    • Their refusal to accept any financial contributions from the applicant or their family members.
  • Fall under the categories of child (of any age), grandchild, sibling, parent, or grandparent of an eligible anchor.
  • They are not inadmissible for reasons other than financial ones.
  • Intend to settle in a province or territory outside of Quebec.
  • Their spouse or common-law partner is missing, presumed dead, deceased, or unable to depart from Sudan.
  • Their spouse or common-law partner falls under the categories of child (of any age), grandchild, sibling, parent, or grandparent of an eligible anchor who is willing to provide support.
  • They satisfy all other eligibility requirements.

An anchor refers to an extended family member who commits to supporting you and/or your family during the initial year in Canada. They will offer financial aid and assist you in obtaining necessities such as housing, food, clothing, and other essentials.

Who is eligible to serve as an anchor?

  1. Be at least 18 years old.
  2. Reside in Canada (excluding the province of Quebec).
  3. Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status.
  4. Demonstrate sufficient income or funds to fulfill the financial obligation.

An anchor cannot be someone who meets the following criteria:

  • Incarcerated in jail or prison.
  • Subject to a removal order in Canada.
  • Currently in the process of applying to renounce their Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status.
  • In default of making a payment on an immigration loan, performance bond, or any other amount they are legally obligated to pay to the Government of Canada (including deferred payments).
  • Declared bankrupt.
  • In default of a sponsorship undertaking, support payments, or repayment of any debt owed to the Government of Canada.
  • Receiving social assistance for any reason other than a disability.
  • Convicted of a criminal offense listed in the public policy.
