New Canadian Visa Requirement for Mexican Citizens

Starting February 29, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time, Mexican citizens traveling by air with a valid US non-immigrant visa or a Canadian visa obtained within the last 10 years can apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). This change accommodates the significant number of Mexican citizens holding US visas, allowing most to continue visiting Canada without a visa. For those not meeting these criteria, a Canadian visitor visa will be required.

This adjustment addresses the rise in asylum claims from Mexican citizens that are rejected, withdrawn, or abandoned. It’s a vital measure to maintain mobility for hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens while upholding the effective management of our immigration and asylum systems.

The process for Mexican citizens applying for work or study permits remains unchanged. They will still have access to various labor avenues in Canada, such as the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program, ensuring continued opportunities for those seeking employment or education in the country.
