Recent Updates on Public-Private College Partnerships for International Students

On March 22, 2024, IRCC announced that international graduates from college programs operated under a public-private curriculum licensing arrangement will no longer qualify for a post-graduation work permit. The revised implementation date for this policy adjustment is May 15, 2024, as opposed to the initially stated date of September 1, 2024. Consequently, international students commencing such programs on or after May 15, 2024, will not be eligible for a post-graduation work permit upon completion.

The alteration in post-graduation work permit requirements doesn’t prohibit graduates from these programs from seeking other types of work permits after graduation. In instances where there’s a labor shortage in Canada, graduates could pursue a work permit backed by an employer’s approved labor market impact assessment, for instance.

Information regarding whether graduates from an institution are eligible for a post-graduation work permit is included in the list of designated learning institutions, accessible on IRCC’s website. IRCC will persist in collaborating with provinces and territories to actively pinpoint programs impacted by the clarification and will update this list as IRCC gather further information from them.
