The temporary policy allowing students in Canada to work over 20 hours per week off campus ended on April 30, 2024, and won’t be extended. Starting this fall, students will be allowed to work up to 24 hours per week off campus.
The change aims to prioritize students’ studies while providing them with the option to work if needed. During academic breaks, students can work unlimited hours.
The decision was informed by student needs, international policies, and research showing the impact of work on academic performance. Further details will be provided later.
Additionally, IRCC is developing a Recognized Institutions Framework to recognize post-secondary institutions maintaining high standards for international students’ selection, support, and retention, ensuring financial security and program integrity.
